Frequently Asked Questions About Aromatherapy

Frequently Asked Questions About Aromatherapy

how to dilute essential oils, using essential oils, Frequently Asked Questions About Aromatherapy, how can I use essential oils, essential oils uses, oil diffuser, Not everyone knows how good essential oils are for body, mind and spirit, so here are some frequently asked questions about aromatherapy. It doesn’t matter if you are new to essential oils or a seasoned pro, there’s always something new to learn!

How do essential oils help me?

Aromatherapy – which is the use of essential oils – addresses the whole person. When used properly, essential oils allow you take charge of your overall well-being. They address issues like inflammation, chronic and occasional pain, headaches, migraines, menopause symptoms, anxiety, depression and digestive concerns. Not every single health issue requires a trip to the doctor; many everyday concerns can be addressed by using essential oil blends. You can diffuse them, inhale them and apply them to your body. I do NOT recommend ingesting essential oils unless you are under the care of a clinical aromatherapist. You can cause real damage to your system when you don’t understand the way essential oils work in your body.

Why do I need a certified aromatherapist?

For starters, we’re trained in all aspects of aromatherapy. We’ve learned how essential oils affect your body, mind and spirit. We’re trained in such things as which oils are good for a given circumstance; which oils to avoid if you are diabetic or asthmatic; which oils will blend together to help you with depression; which oils to stay away from if you are allergic to aspirin and which oils should not be used on children under a certain age. My certification course contained 76 hours of anatomy and physiology, and over 235 hours of chemistry, blending by component, plant part, scent, etc. Just because essential oils are plant-based and natural doesn’t mean they are perfectly safe in every situation.

Will any essential oil be okay to use?

No. Your liver filters everything you put on or in your body. When the oils are distilled from plant matter have been sprayed with pesticides, you are basically negating the effect of the oils. Also, using a small company who goes directly to the distillers themselves means the oils are ethically and sustainably distilled as well as certified organic and/or pesticide-free. There are a few companies out there that I trust:

Each of the above companies are small, independently owned and offer GC/MS reports right on their websites to prove purity. These companies teach safe methods of using their oils – they aren’t pushing oils to make money. Be cautious of companies who want you to join their group in order to get a better price on oils.

How long do essential oils last?

That depends. Citrus oils have smaller molecules so they last for up to two years from distillation. Oils such as Frankencense, Patchouli and Vetiver last for several years as their molecules are heavier and more dense. All essential oils need to be kept tightly closed and in a very cool area to keep their potency. Keeping them in your bathroom or kitchen with shorten their shelf life.

Can I apply essential oils directly to my skin?

No. You should always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil such as coconut, avocado or olive oil. Most oils could cause sensitivities or possibly burn your skin, so always dilute them first. The only real exception is Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia). This is such a mild essential oil that you can use it without diluting in most cases. If you have sensitive skin or have children under the age of 10, always dilute essential oils!

How much do you charge as an aromatherapist?

I charge $95 per consultation plus the cost of the blend. The consultation fee covers researching any medications you take for your health concerns, what issues you want to address and the essential oils that can help you trigger your body’s innate healing abilities. As long as I don’t have to research your medications or any health issues, I simply charge for the cost of your blend. I can’t make any guarantees – neither can your doctor – but what I can do is offer you natural – holistic – tools to help you take charge of your own well being.

How long does it take to create a blend?

As long as I have the essential oil in stock (I almost always do), then I can create your blend on the same day. This does not include weekends or holidays.

What other questions do you have? I’m happy to talk with you, especially when I am at the farmer’s markets, fairs and festivals. If you need a consultation, I work mainly through Skype or on the phone, so you don’t even have to leave your home if you don’t want to.

Please let me show you how you can easily take charge of your overall well-being. Call, email or click on the link to fill out the contact form today.

As always, I send you my blessings!

Change Is In The Air!

Change Is In The Air!

Change, aromatherapist in Winston-Salem, holistic life coach in Winston-Salem, sinus problemsChange is in the air and that’s a good thing! I’m excited about the direction my business is taking and I’m here to share the good news with you.

As of January 1, 2017, Pixie Garden and Gifts will officially become Scented Balance, Inc. I am proud to announce these changes as Scented Balance reflects the combination of handcrafted artisan products with my aromatherapy and holistic life coaching practice.

Why the change? Well…it’s a lo-o-o-o-o-ng story and I won’t bore you with all the details (who has time for that anyway?) but I’ll give you the nutshell version.

I began my journey with Pixie Garden and Gifts hoping to open a charming gift, garden and gourmet boutique by the ocean. I worked pretty darn hard to make it happen – over several years as a matter of fact – but doors simply did not open for me.

You know, you can bang on a locked door only so long before you get the message that it isn’t meant to be.

So, instead of banging on that locked door, I chose to bloom right where I was planted and in 2015, Pixie Garden and Gifts became a mobile boutique at farmers markets, fairs and festivals. I knew I could do good things to help people find the whimsy and magic in everyday life, so I included handcrafted personal care products along with the gift and garden lines. Not necessarily what I wanted, but close enough.

I have met so many wonderful people over the last two years. So many sweet souls have come to my booth; we’ve talked, we’ve cried, we’ve laughed, we’ve looked at solutions for your issues and hugged one another’s neck. I have no words to describe the joy and fulfillment I have when you tell me how one of my handcrafted products has made a difference in your skin – and your life.

That part will NOT change! I love working with you, helping you take back your life from eczema and psoriasis and helping you find solutions to address your aches, pains, anxiety, depression and anything else you need.

So what changed?

Aromatherapy opened my eyes to the amazing benefits of essential oils. Each essential oil has its’ own therapeutic benefits to help you take charge of your overall well being in body, mind and spirit. I began my aromatherapy training in April, 2016 and finished in September, 2016. It was a long, hard summer trying to run a business and learn so much chemistry, but I did it!

It was serendipity that I was researching essential oils to blend into new scents and happened upon the opportunity to learn how they can help you feel better, touch your emotions and speak to your soul. Essential oils are powerful tools when used correctly and I knew I wanted to learn how to use them to help everyone who crossed my path.

Balance in body, mind and spirit is very important to me. Too much of a good thing isn’t good for balance in any part of life and being an aromatherapist has taught me so much about this subject. Using a particular blend of essential oils geared toward your unique concerns can help you achieve better balance in every aspect of your life.

With my training, I offer therapeutic products to serve those who live with eczema and psoriasis, chronic pain, migraines, digestive and respiratory issues, sinus problems, anxiety and depression as well as experiencing menopause concerns.

It truly feeds my soul knowing that I’ve helped someone who lives with sinus problems or has to deal with a migraine that comes out of nowhere. It makes my heart so happy when you tell me you came to a market because I am there and you want more of a product that is helping your anxiety. It is incredibly fulfilling when you tell me that you are better able to deal with chronic pain because of the products I painstakingly craft.*

More than anything, I want you to know how grateful I am to each and every one of you for your time, your kindness, your business and your willingness to look at your healthcare concerns from a different angle. You are helping me make my dreams come true.

I want to help you and I can better serve you as an aromatherapist and holistic life coach at Scented Balance.

You will still see the Pixie Garden and Gifts logo over the few months as I don’t want anyone to think I’ve disappeared – it’s still me and I’m still your favorite Chief Pixie (I hope!) – as whimsical as ever, just better able to serve you!

I would love to talk with you about your needs and concerns. You can email me directly at balance (a) scentedbalance (dot) com or go here to fill out a contact form.

As always, I am very grateful you chose to stop by.

What is Aromatherapy?

What is Aromatherapy?

essential oils uses, What is Aromatherapy, using essential oils, therapeutic-grade essential oils, body, mind and spirit, What is Aromatherapy? I get asked that question a lot. Someone will ask me what I do for a living and when I tell them, they look at me like a deer caught in headlights.

The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy – NAHA – answers this question beautifully:

Aromatherapy, also referred to as Essential Oil therapy, can be defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.  It seeks to unify physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s innate healing process.

So, in a nutshell, as an aromatherapist, I offer plant-based guidance and tools to help your body, mind and spirit be as healthy as possible.

I don’t just look at the physical issues that you confidentially discuss with me. I also look at what’s going on emotionally as well.

I am a firm believer that all physical maladies begin in the 6 inches between your ears. Yes – I know – smoking causes cancer, too much junk may cause diabetes, too much stress causes heart attacks, etc., etc. etc.

I get that.

What most people don’t get is that the underlying reasons why we smoke, eat junk and feel stressed out is based on emotions. I have learned an all too difficult lesson that my reactions causes most of my pain on an emotional level which usually comes out in something physical – especially when I try to stifle those emotions.

Case in point – I’m really having a tough time with my left shoulder. It hurts; I can’t exercise and free movement is hampered. Shoulder pain is all about bearing a load that is too heavy and, for me personally, trying to do everything by myself. Yep – you guessed it – the emotional stress of trying to do everything alone is showing up as physical pain in my shoulder.

So what am I doing about it? Actually, I’m doing a lot.

First of all, some things that I thought were important had to go by the wayside. I have learned that I can’t do everything by myself and expect to get a good night’s rest. Oh – and believe it or not, I forget to eat. Seriously. I get so wrapped up in what I’m doing that I don’t listen to my body rhythms. Simply sitting down at the table with clean healthy food makes a huge difference in my stress level.

Secondly – and I believe this is very important – I am using pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils to address my underlying emotional issues. I created a blend of essential oils that I diffuse in the air to assist in letting go of emotional baggage, to address old traumas, to shine a light on anger, and most of all, to calm and uplift my energy.*

How can I help you if I don’t help myself first? You can’t give someone a drink from an empty cup.

I love being an aromatherapist. It is fulfilling and speaks to my soul. Whenever a client comes back and says that the blend I gave them really made a difference for their issue, it feeds my soul. I am blessed with amazing health – except for that nagging shoulder problem – and I want to help you take control of your physical, mental and spiritual health, too.

How does Aromatherapy help?

I cannot heal you in any way, shape or form. What I can do as an aromatherapist is offer an amazing and plant-based tool that triggers your body’s innate healing ability – whether it be physical, mental or spiritual.*

My approach to aromatherapy is to address the whole person – body, mind and spirit. I am focusing on areas where I know aromatherapy makes a difference:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Digestive Issues
  • Respiratory Issues
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Menopause
  • Eczema and Psoriasis

My fee for a one-hour confidential consultation is $95 plus the cost of blends. The consultation fee covers researching any medications you take, what issues you want to address and the essential oils that can help you trigger your body’s innate healing abilities. I can’t make any guarantees – neither can your doctor – but what I can do is offer you natural – holistic – tools to help you take charge of your own well being. I work mainly through Skype so you don’t even have to leave your home.

Take that first step today – call or email or go here to fill out a contact form.

As always, I send you my blessings!

Starting Over Fresh

Starting Over Fresh

Starting Over Fresh, new beginnings, alternative healthcare, essential oils, best essential oils
A Fresh Start By

Starting over fresh has such a wonderful connotation, doesn’t it? It makes you feel like everything that’s been holding you down has fallen away and you feel lighter and refreshed.

That’s what I’m feeling today. Maybe – just maybe – my fresh start has finally arrived.

What brought on the fresh start you ask? (You did ask – right?) Aromatherapy.

If you’ve come to my website ( then I know you are looking for a better and more natural way to look and feel good without toxic chemicals. I want you to know how grateful I am that you came by because you are part of my fresh start.

What brought this on is a desire to make a difference in someone’s – your – life. I can only stare at a computer screen so long before I feel like I’m not doing any good at all.

This journey began with body butters – beautiful, silky body butter that makes your skin feel so nourished. Then, it was shower gels and body mists and on and on and on. All of the products I handcrafted were scented with pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. It dawned on me that if I was using essential oils to scent all these products, shouldn’t I know more about how they work?

That led to Aromahead Institute, one of the few accredited schools to learn aromatherapy. Essential oils are so incredibly good for things like pain, respiratory issues, digestion, circulation, anxiety, depression and skin problems. 342 hours later, I became a certified aromatherapist.

If you’re wondering if aromatherapy is right for you, click here for frequently asked questions. Whether you’re healthy or not feeling so hot, aromatherapy is an ideal extra tool in your heathcare toolkit.

The best product I’ve handcrafted so far? PsoMaxx(TM), an awesome balm for dealing with psoriasis, eczema and other dermatitis issues.* The reviews are astounding!

Another wonderful product I handcraft is PainGenix. It’s a balm for chronic pain and along with the PainGenix inhaler, people have told me it’s made a difference in the quality of their lives*.

Just knowing that I’m helping people have a better quality of life is a good feeling.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using plant-based essential oils to promote the well being of body, mind and spirit. As an aromatherapist, I research and create essential oil blends that speak to many issues using the wisdom of natural ingredients.

Essential oils are not the end-all-be-all magic cure to life’s maladies. They play an integral part in staying healthy but only you can heal you. Your doctor cannot heal you; all those pills cannot heal you; the only thing that can heal you is YOU. An aromatherapist, a doctor or a pill can only give you a tool to help you trigger your body’s own natural healing ability.

You also have to make sound lifestyle choices, but that’s another blog for another time. :o)

I believe I have a gift for aromatherapy and I truly want to share my gift with the world. While I’m realistic enough to know that I cannot save the world, I can help YOU take charge of your overall well-being through the use of the best essential oils.

Thank you for stopping by – I’m very grateful you chose to spend time on my website. Here’s to starting over fresh – I’m looking forward to serving you!

Why not take the first step in taking charge of your health – contact me today – let’s get started!
