Talking About The Difficult Stuff In Life

Talking About The Difficult Stuff, difficult conversations, sexual abuse, Shaman, Emotional Healing

If you were kind enough to read my blog post from last week (thank you!) then you know I talked about some tender and harsh events from my childhood that are very difficult to talk about. I met and talked with Melody Morris a couple of weeks ago which is where I got the idea to dive right in and not shy away from my experiences.

So I asked Melody Morris to write a guest post to explain how she helps women own their muchness and helps them realize their full potential.

I’m honored this week that Melody is here to share her story.

Where Own Your Muchness Began

Melody Morris is the CEO of Total Energy Healing USA, a motivational speaker, modern day mystic and highly intuitive Shaman. She has studied multiple energy healing modalities for more than 2 decades, both from scientific and spiritual aspects.

She empowers women daily to Own Your Muchness by helping them heal from past sexual and relationship trauma and teaches them how to manifest the lives and relationships they desire and deserve.

Melody has also studied manifestation and mindset for many years and loves to share her knowledge and her intuitive messages with her clients.

Melody’s Experience With Own Your Muchness

I know many of you read Melissa’s post from last week and could feel how difficult it was for her to be so honest about her life in such a public way. Thank you for sharing such a painful memory with us. You are brave and will help many women with your story.

I was raised by parents who cared for me in ways that I can’t even fathom.  I look back on me as a child and wonder how they didn’t eat me like some wild animals do!

Despite their best efforts I grew up believing everything that happened to anyone that I cared about was my fault. I took on responsibility for everything, even things that had absolutely nothing to do with me.

I was highly sensitive to people in pain so I always imagined myself going into some kind of medicine; a doctor at first and then as I grew older I thought maybe a physical therapist. My dream was always to be some form of healer.

My negative track record with sex didn’t happen until college when at 20 years old I thought I was bullet proof and walked the wrong path across my college campus and was pinned down and raped by a baseball team member, while 2 of his buddies helped hold me.

I completely clammed up, I never told anyone. If any of my family reads this, it’ll be the first they have ever heard of it. Even then, that was my fault. I thought I deserved it somehow.

My relationship with sex and intimate relationships just continued in a downward spiral from there. I was completely void of emotion when I accepted an engagement ring and then later married a man who turned out to be just another someone who would abuse me, in a long line of abusive someone’s.

One relationship after another I would stay and put up with all kinds of bullshit from all sides, until it became too much for me and then I would run, usually right into another bad relationship.

It had been a long road and by this point I was so very tired. Moving to North Carolina was the change that really began my journey into embracing me and owning my own muchness.

From One Bad Relationship To Another

Shortly after moving here I was introduced to shamanic healing. I already had an established meditation practice, I could astral project and effect my own and others energy, so I was no stranger to the more spiritual, less religious path.

It has been, at times, a challenge for me to explain to people what I do and how I got here to this place of Owning My Muchness.

I was like a dirty pond, with my Muchness at the bottom waiting to be released from layer after layer of shit I had piled on top of it beginning with blaming myself as a child and continuing right up until that point.

When you’re clearing a pond, you skim off everything on the surface and then wait for the next layer of junk to rise, so you can skim it off, leaving room for the next layer to rise, over and over until you clear the water. Believe in Yourself, Self Doubt, Self Confidence, Fear, healing from sexual trauma

My layers of pond scum were covering up some awesomeness that I am still in awe of some days.

We each have our own pond and at the bottom under nasty icky layers of pond scum, our Muchness waits to be uncovered.

This is what I do. I teach others how to skim off the pond scum and clear the water so your individual and awesomely unique YOU can show up and shine.

In everything we experience, there is a lesson to learn about ourselves. For example, a limiting belief that we can change will bring us closer and closer to being exactly who we are at our core, where our true power comes from.

All of the masks we wear, the self-worth issues, the blame issues, the addictions, etc., none of those things are us. These are techniques we use to make us feel more palatable to ourselves or to others.

We each have our own pond. It’s up to you whether you are ready to clean it up or not. If you are, I’m here to help.

I’ve done it myself so I have some insight that just might help you through your scum-skimming exercises.

Own Your Muchness. It’s there at the bottom of the pond waiting for you to let it shine!

Using Essential Oils for Immunity

Stave Off the Cold and Flu

It’s that time of the year where the germs are flying around EVERYWHERE! Using essential oils for immunity will absolutely give you a leg up on all those sneezing and wheezing folks out there spreading their joy.

Why do we get sick more in the winter vs. the summer? There’s several reasons.

  1. Shorter days mean less production of Vitamin D and Melatonin
  2. We’re breathing mostly recycled air and getting very little fresh air
  3. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter lowers your resistance
  4. The air tends to be much drier – germs like dry air
  5. More stress – wait – what?

Yes, we’re more stressed in the wintertime. The Straight Dope explains it like this:

Psychological (as opposed to physical) stress may also play a role. A study published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that the more psychological stress people were under, the more likely they were to get colds.

All of the above combine to create the perfect storm and voila – we get more colds and flu in the winter. Essential Oils for Immunity, vitamin D and melatonin

If you haven’t gotten enough sleep on a regular basis, forget to wash your hands more often and don’t go outside very much, you’re just asking for a cold or the flu

Harvard University pretty much says the same thing but with lots more college words:

1) During the winter, people spend more time indoors with the windows sealed, so they are more likely to breathe the same air as someone who has the flu and thus contract the virus (3).

2) Days are shorter during the winter, and lack of sunlight leads to  low levels of vitamin D and melatonin, both of which require sunlight for their generation. This compromises our immune systems, which in turn decreases ability to fight the virus (3).

3) The influenza virus may survive better in colder, drier climates, and therefore be able to infect more people (3).

How Do Essential Oils Help?

Essential oils are ideal for boosting your immune system and help you stay healthier in the long run. Here’s some of the best essential oils for immunity:

  • Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllata) helps to minimize unwanted bacterial, viral, or fungal activity.
  • Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is powerful for immune support and can help reduce the presence of unwanted fungal or viral activity.
  • Lemon (Citrus limon) helps boost your immune system and your liver loves it!
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) supports healthy lung function and boosts your immune system.
  • Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ct camphor) promotes healthy respiratory functions and helps when fighting a cold or flu.
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) promotes balance and is antibacterial, antifungal and stimulates the immune system.
  • Tea Tea (Melaleuca alternifolia) is antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, supports a healthy respiratory system and helps with cough and congestion.

There’s a whole bunch more, but honestly, with these essential oils, your immune system will absolutely love you (and hey, we’re getting close to Valetine’s Day – why not show some self-love?)!

You’ll find all of these amazing essential oils in an immune-boosting blend I created called Thievery Synergy Blend.

Diffuse a few drops in a cold mist diffuser, breathe it directly out of the bottle or dilute it with your favorite carrier oil or lotion and apply to your chest and neck at least 3 times a day.

Want the Scented Balance Thievery Synergy Blend? You can get it by filling out the contact form and I’ll ship it to you lickety-split! Aromatherapy can help you get and stay healthy through the seasons – I can show you how!

Thank you for stopping by – I’m grateful for you!

Blessings,

Melissa

Adrenal Fatigue – A Big Reason Why You’re Tired – Part 2

Adrenal Fatigue, Chronic Stress, Feeling Burned Out, healing burned out adrenal glands, why am I so tired all the time, why am I always tired, adrenal fatigue test, adrenal glands and cortisol

Last week, in Part 1 of Adrenal Fatigue – A Big Reason Why You’re Tired, I began sharing my experience with burning out my adrenal system. This issue is very real and more prevalent than you might think. This week, I’m delving into the steps I took to regain my health.

Why is Adrenal Fatigue So Ignored?

I fought over the adrenal issue with 5 (!) different doctors. Adrenal fatigue is even worse for women because there’s still a lot of doctors who will simply prescribe some sort of pill and send a woman on her way. The first doctor I went to told me that I was depressed and needed to see a psychiatrist and prescribed an anti-depressant.

I’m still shocked over this – she wasn’t willing to look at anything remotely close to my adrenal system and told me I needed to stop being so stressed out, take this little pill and all would be well.

The second, third and fourth doctors weren’t much better. One told me I was working too hard and I needed to relax. They said that blood tests were in the “normal range” and to stop worrying about it. One even said that I was most likely imagining my symptoms! Can you imagine a doctor saying that to a man?

See what I’m getting at?

What I’ve learned is that doctors are not trained in medical school to be aware of anything except that the adrenal glands exist. There’s no time to learn about chronic stress, there’s no time to dig a bit deeper for the root cause and rare is the physician who knows what a saliva test is. The very best adrenal fatigue test is a saliva test. A saliva test will tell you what’s been going on in your body over the last 3 – 6 months.

Another reason it’s ignored is that the main therapy for regaining your health from adrenal fatigue is through diet and lifestyle adjustments. Ooooh, doctors don’t believe that this is legitimate medicine – you must be on some sort of prescription pill for it to be real!

Many allopathic physicians have never heard of adrenal fatigue (so it must not exist, right?) and if they have heard of it, they’re sadly misinformed.

What I’m about to share with you is what I did – it’s important to talk with a medical professional who understands adrenal fatigue and burnout. Very important.

The Beginning of Getting Healthy

The fifth doctor I saw was an integrative physician but, in 1999, I had to travel 75 miles each way to see her. There was no one in Winston-Salem at the time who understood adrenal fatigue and I’d never heard of functional medicine or naturopaths.

What’s the difference between an allopathic and integrative physician? It turns out a whole lot. The best explanation I’ve found for integrative medicine is this from Dr. Andrew Weil:

Integrative medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative.

The integrative physician is focused on the body, mind and spirit connection and how each is important to the other. An integrative physician combines the best of Western medicine with the time-honored traditions of Eastern medicine to give his or her patient the best methods for well-being.

Anyway, I digress.

Doctor #5 worked closely with a compounding pharmacy and that compounding pharmacist suggested Dr. Wilson’s Adrenal Health products would do the most good. I am not an affiliate, I’m simply giving you the information of what I took – these products have stood the test of time and they worked amazingly well for me.

Doctor #5 told me that it would take approximately one month of taking these supplements for every year my adrenal system had been compromised. For me, that meant several years.

I took the Adrenal Rebuilder and Super Adrenal Stress Formula. I couldn’t afford to take all of the supplements, so I chose the two that would do the most good for me. I also took a probiotic and at the time, that wasn’t as readily available as it is now.

I’m currently a patient at Robinhood Integrative Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Their approach is simple: to focus on the underlying cause of your symptoms. I can tell you from the last 10 years of being a patient at RIH, I believe the medical professionals there want you to be as healthy as possible in the simplest and most natural way possible.

An integrative physician, functional medical professional, naturopath, herbalist and certified aromatherapist all understand that getting to the root cause of your symptoms is the only way to get you back to health.

Diet and Lifestyle Adjustments

Here’s the BIG thing – you can’t just take a few supplements and keep making the same poor lifestyle choices and expect to get any better. For starters, my sleep habits had to change immediately. I was going to bed as late as 11:30 PM and rising at 6:30 AM which is not enough sleep.

My doctor told me that the body processes cortisol around midnight. Your adrenal glands produce cortisol in response to the conditions of your daily life. When you’re constantly stressed out, your adrenal “tank” gets depleted and can’t keep up, especially first thing in the morning. She also said – and this is immensely important – every hour of sleep you get before midnight is worth two hours of sleep after midnight

Most nights, you’ll find me heading for bed around 10 PM. Sometimes it’s a bit later, but almost always before 10:30 PM.

When it comes to stress, only you can find the best way to deal with it. So let me put my holistic life coach hat on for a moment and ask you a few questions.

  • How much do you take on in your life and how long will you bend before you break? Learn to say NO!
  • And tell me, if you’re chronically stressed and your body rebels and it puts you flat on your back, what then?
  • What good are you doing for anyone – much less yourself – if you can’t get out of bed?
  • Do you think you’re a super hero and must do everything for everyone?

Okay, I’ll stop asking questions – but think about it!

Next, get rid of any food that is processed. All those chemicals and dyes that are in processed food are stressing your already over-taxed adrenal system. Whole foods that you cook from scratch are the biggest help here. That’s why farmer’s markets are so popular – there’s good clean food from your local farmer and food is medicine!

Caffeine is a no-no. I began drinking coffee the moment I got up and stopped about the time I went to bed. This is disastrous. I immediately cut back and these days, I enjoy one or two cups of coffee in the morning and the rest of the day is water.

Sugar causes more damage to your body than just about anything. Get rid of cakes, cookies, candy – including alcohol. All of that processed sugar taxes your adrenal system beyond belief and causes major inflammation. You don’t have to give up your mixed drink or glass of wine or beer forever, but see if you can’t go without them for at least a few weeks. I had to do this and now enjoy 1 or 2 glasses of wine most evenings.

Another culprit – surprisingly – is over-exercising. Working out too much can spike cortisol levels and your adrenals are already taxed. Take it slow and gradually increase the intensity of your workouts. That seems counter-intuitive, but it’s true.

How Does Aromatherapy Help?

One last thing. I had no idea what aromatherapy was in the late 1990’s. Now I do. The proper essential oils are excellent for helping to restore your vitality and nourishing your adrenal glands.

Aromatherapy works incredibly well in conjunction with proper lifestyle choices. Just remember, if you’re not willing to change anything, nothing will help you.

I noticed the same adrenal symptoms a couple of years ago, made the necessary lifestyle changes and added:

  • Magnesium Oil – your body is in desperate need of this daily, but especially when your adrenal system is taxed.
  • Stress Support Aromatherapy Roller Ball is ideal as a tonic for your stressed out adrenals.
  • Peaceful Ease Aromatherapy Roller Ball helps with the wound up feeling and depression.
  • Anxiety Ease Aromatherapy Roller Ball is ideal for assisting with anxiety and stress.

Adrenal Fatigue does not go away by itself. You need to talk with an integrative physician, a naturopath, herbalist – or certified aromatherapist. Fill out this simple contact form and let’s talk today. Don’t wait!

Blessings,

Melissa
