Unexpected Changes, dealing with unexpected death, essential oils for grief, new beginningsThis week, I’ve witnessed unexpected changes. A family member passed away suddenly and my dear friend found out she is having a baby she didn’t expect. Why does the circle of life put us on a roller coaster? Why does the circle of life shock and change us so?

I wish I had answers. Deep, satisfying answers that speak to my heart and sense of logic. What we sometimes forget is that with beginnings come endings and with endings come new beginnings and fresh starts. The familiar is done and there’s a bittersweet tug in my heart.

So, the phone call came about my family member. We weren’t close as adults and we hadn’t seen each other in five years but we grew up together – lots of cousins and happy, carefree days. Lots of happy childhood memories came flooding back as did the flood of unexpected tears.

Ah, yes. Nobody gets out alive. Sigh…

Then, a late night text wanting to talk – a baby – what an unexpected delight! Or is it? Unexpected changes at an unexpected time in the circle of life.

Boy, does your life ever change with a baby! Does anyone actually realize how much gear you need to just run errands with a baby? And diapers. Sheesh – diapers! I can’t even begin to fathom the cost of diapers these days.

One comes in, one goes out.

In both instances, there is healing. One was sick and couldn’t be healed – and now is healed and at peace. A new life on the way to heal – maybe? Heal past heartaches, heal current fears. To help heal and change in beautiful, unimaginable ways.

Hells bells. All I wanted was a strong cup of coffee and a bigohonkin glass of wine. What I got was change – the circle of life.

On both ends of the spectrum, there is grief. I find it interesting that some cultures celebrate death as finally being free from this life and grieve birth because of the heartache that lies ahead. Even with the happiest of changes, life becomes different – a new normal.

Unexpected changes tend to encourage deep listening, deep thinking, deep questions.

Every single day, life gives us unexpected changes and the more we try to hold on to what we have, the more is taken from us – at least that’s been my experience. For the most part, I’m good with change. Once in a while, change is good to shake up the mundane, everyday routine. Change brings a fresh perspective, new ways to see life, new things to think about and, sometimes, a new path.

Sometimes, I wish changes came faster and other times, I wish the world would stop spinning for just a little while so I can get my sea legs.

Dealing With Unexpected Changes and New Beginnings

Several years ago, I went through a miserable, r-e-a-l-l-y rough patch in my life.  Some of the changes I could see coming; some unexpected changes hit so hard and outtanowhere that all I could do was sit down and sob.

I am not the same person I was before the shit hit the fan and maybe that’s the point. I know I will never forget that time and all the heartaches that I had to endure. Yes, I know many things happen for a reason (not all things do, though) but I still shake my head over some of it.

What you find in times of unexpected changes is strength you never knew you had. Your heart may very well be in a million pieces but there is always that hidden strength to deal with change in the circle of life.

I looked to The Simply Luxurious Life to find wisdom in unexpected changes.

When change is thrust upon us uninvited, and it will, there are ways to make the most of it and come out ahead and even more fulfilled, exuding more strength and in the end, thankful for the opportunity. Yes, you read that correctly – thankful that it occurred.

I’m not necessarily thankful for life’s unexpected changes, however, I’m so happy for my beautiful friend and so sad for my family – I wish for happy memories, healing and grace for both.

What unexpected changes are you experiencing in your circle of life? What changes do you hope for? What changes are/were unwelcome? How did those changes change you?
