As I write this post, it’s a cold, raw, wintry day. I struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and this kind of day makes it harder to deal with it. To stay balanced and centered, I’m using Bergamot for depression.
Pure Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) essential oil is one of my go-to oils especially during this time of the year. It has a warm citrus scent that brightens your day and enhances feelings of well-being. It inspires hope and deep-down joy.
Bergamot is an inedible fruit yet Earl Grey is famous for flavoring their tea with it – but don’t try that at home! It’s powerful enough to eat through a plastic cup!
It’s also considered phototoxic meaning that if you put too much of it on your skin and sit in the sun or a tanning booth, you could get a nasty burn. (Bergapten is the component responsible for that.) 2 drops of Bergamot per 1 ounce of carrier oil is a safe level if you use it on your skin.
What Else Is Bergamot Good For?
I sleep soundly most of the time, but I don’t always feel like it’s recuperative sleep – does that make sense? I add 3 drops of Bergamot and 2 drops of Lavender to the cold mist diffuser in my bedroom which helps me get better quality sleep.
It’s considered to be a central nervous system tonic. That means it acts to restore, refresh and invigorate your central nervous system.
For those of you who are familiar with Skeeter-Off Bug Repellent – Bergamot is one of the ingredients as bugs don’t like it!
The physical qualities are:
- Anti-bacterial
- Anti-viral (especially helpful with herpes simplex I)
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-spasmodic
Here are the energetic qualities of Bergamot:
- nurtures your 4th or Heart Chakra
- instills confidence
- assists with fresh beginnings
- promotes focus and clarity
Bergamot is a wonderful all around uplifting essential oil. Being indoors with the windows and doors closed tightly is no fun at all and Bergamot will bring a sense of freshness and joy to these long winter days!
