Tired, Wired & Over It: When Your Nervous System Needs a Break

Tired woman sitting by a window with a warm drink, taking a quiet moment to rest and reset. You’re tired.

Not the  “I stayed up too late watching one more episode” tired.

You’re the kind of tired where you wake up already weary, drag yourself through the afternoon, finally reach the end of the day…and somehow your brain decides now would be an excellent time to perk up.

You’re exhausted, but you can’t completely relax.

Sound familiar?

There are plenty of reasons for persistent fatigue, and ongoing or unusual exhaustion deserves a conversation with your healthcare provider. But there’s another piece of the puzzle we don’t always think about:

Your nervous system may be working overtime.

Your Body Wasn’t Designed to Be “On” All Day

Your nervous system is constantly helping your body respond to what’s happening around you.

When something requires action, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in. Your heart rate may increase, muscles tense and attention sharpens. That’s your familiar fight-or-flight response, and it’s incredibly useful when you actually need it.

The problem? Modern stress rarely shows up as one big event followed by hours of peaceful recovery.

It’s traffic. Emails. Bills. Phone notifications. Work deadlines. Family responsibilities. The news. And that never-ending mental list running quietly in the background.

One thing by itself may not be a big deal. But when there isn’t enough recovery between one demand and the next, you can begin to feel like you’re running on fumes while your engine is still revving.

Hello, Tired and Wired

You might think being exhausted would mean your body automatically shuts down and sleeps beautifully.

Wouldn’t that be nice?

Instead, prolonged stress can leave you feeling both tired and activated at the same time.

You might feel exhausted but unable to unwind, wake up during the night with your brain suddenly ready for a staff meeting, carry tension in your shoulders and jaw, struggle to concentrate, or feel unusually overwhelmed by things you normally handle just fine.

I know that “tired but wired” feeling all too well. Years ago, chronic stress eventually led me into adrenal burnout — an experience I wrote about in my two-part series, Adrenal Fatigue & Burnout: Part 1 and Adrenal Fatigue & Burnout: Part 2.

Rest Isn’t Always the Same as Recovery

Here’s the sneaky part.

You can sit on the sofa and still be stressed.

You can scroll through your phone for an hour without actually settling.

And you can sometimes get plenty of sleep and still wake up feeling like somebody forgot to plug you in overnight.

Recovery isn’t simply not working.

Your body needs opportunities to shift away from constant doing and toward rest and recovery.

That doesn’t require three hours of meditation on a mountaintop. Thank goodness, because most of us have things to do.

Start smaller.

Take a few slow breaths. Sit outside without your phone. Listen to music that makes your shoulders drop. Take a nice walk without turning it into a workout. Laugh. Spend time with someone who makes you feel comfortable.

Sometimes your nervous system simply needs a chance to receive the message:

Nothing is required of me right now. I can soften.

Give Your Nervous System Somewhere to Land

That’s a big part of what I do at Scented Balance Healing Arts.

Through aromatherapy, energy calming sessions, sound therapy with tuning forks and crystal bowls, I create a quiet space where you can step away from the constant stimulation and simply slow down, settle and exhale for a while.

I can’t remove the traffic, the deadlines, the bills or that person who keeps sending you emails marked URGENT.

But we can give your body a break from responding to all of it.

Because rest isn’t something you have to earn after everything else is finished.

Everything is never finished.

Sometimes, you simply need to stop.

Breathe.

And give yourself a little room to reset.

Ready for a reset? Schedule your session today and give yourself an hour where absolutely nothing is required of you.

Feel Your Best. Naturally.

Shenanigans and be well,

Melissa
