5 things you might not know about sinus problems, more migraines in the summertime, barometric pressure and migraines,

Have you noticed an increase in the number of migraines you have? If you are, you’re not imagining things. Here’s 5 reasons you get more migraines in the summertime.

You may get more frequent migraines in the wintertime. Yes, the weather plays a huge (and largely uncontrollable) part in your migraines.

Why Do I Get More Migraines In The Summertime?

  1. Barometric Pressure. Yeesh…this is a biggie. The barometric pressure tends to change more often and very quickly in the summertime due to humidity and pop-up thunderstorms. If you’re prone to summertime migraines, you can feel a rainy stretch a day or so before it hits and certainly a few hours before a popup thunderstorm. MigraineAgain.com explains it like this: Our head is made up of pockets of air that we call sinuses. Usually, those pockets of air are at equilibrium with the atmospheric pressure. When there’s a change in that atmospheric pressure, it creates a change in what you’re experiencing in your head and what’s going on in the air around you. That shift is a Migraine trigger.
  2. Bright Lights. We’re outside more in the summertime and the sun is bright – many migraine sufferers say that the bright summer sunshine can trigger a migraine. If you’re sensitive to light, this is a big one for you. Keep your sunglasses handy!
  3. Heat and Humidity. Here’s another big trigger. As much as I love heat and humidity (I grew up in St. Louis – I’m used to it!) I know it triggers headaches and migraines in those who are sensitive to it. Getting overheated in the summer may trigger migraines. And scents (especially from chemicals) are stronger and hang around longer in humid weather.
  4. Dehydration. Please don’t shoot the messenger –  are you drinking enough water? Exercise, diet sodas, not enough plain water, warmer temperatures, higher humidity and sitting all day in air conditioning all drain your body of much needed moisture. This can cause a shift in your electrolytes triggering a migraine. Can you drink 4 more ounces of water three times a day?
  5. Chemically Scented Products. Y’all, we’re spraying chemical disinfectants everywhere – yes, with good reason. But those chemicals can easily trigger headaches and migraines (and asthma, too). They’re everywhere; in your sunscreen, perfumes, body lotions, soaps, shampoos, disinfectants – you name it, it’s full of chemicals. There are natural/green alternatives that are every bit as good as their chemical counterparts. (Not sure where to start? Fill out this contact form and let’s talk!)

  1. Yes, all of those trigger my headaches, especially the barometric pressure. The summer is a rough time of the year for me. Thank you for sharing this info. I do love your Headache Ease rollerball. I am really sensitive to smell, but your products certainly make aromatherapy accessible to me.

    1. I’ve been told that windy days (which changes the air pressure) can trigger migraines also. Goodness – I’m so sorry that such a glorious time of the year is the hardest for you! I’m so glad that aromatherapy helps you. The good news? You can apply the blends anywhere on your body to get the benefits. That means you can apply Headache Ease to the back of your knees and on your lower back so that you won’t smell it as much. So grateful for you – be well!
