Beyond The Feast: Finding True Nourishment This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving week is here! It’s a time for gathering with loved ones, eating way too much yummy food, and remembering our blessings.
However, the holidays can also bring stress, overwhelm, and a feeling of being pulled in a million directions. With all the craziness, it’s important to prioritize your well-being during the holiday hustle.
Pay Attention To Your Holiday Stressors
While Thanksgiving is (supposedly) a joyous occasion, it often comes with its own set of challenges. Travel stress, family dynamics, meal preparation pressures, and financial strains can all contribute to feeling anxious or depleted.
Before you get caught up in the whirlwind, take a moment to pay attention to your particular stressors. Then, ask yourself how you can proactively lessen their impact.
Simple acts like setting realistic expectations, delegating tasks, and carving out time for yourself can make a significant difference. One thing I enjoyed as an adult was sitting at the kids’ table for Thanksgiving dinner. Kids are genuine and funny and I always appreciated the comic relief!
Aromatherapy for Thanksgiving
Long time readers and clients (thank you!!) know that my first passion is aromatherapy for every day and every occasion.
Aromatherapy is a powerful tool for managing stress and enhancing your overall well-being especially during the holiday season. Certain essential oils have calming, grounding, and uplifting properties that can help you navigate the Thanksgiving festivities with greater ease. Here are a few recommendations:
* Lavender: This popular essential oil is known for its relaxing and anxiety-reducing properties. Diffuse lavender in your home
to create a peaceful atmosphere, or add a few drops to a warm bath at bedtime to calm your anxiety.
* Sweet Orange: This uplifting and energizing scent can help combat fatigue and boost your mood. Diffuse it throughout the day, especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
* Frankincense: Grounding and centering, frankincense can help promote a sense of calm and connection. It’s also known to reduce inflammation and support overall well-being. Consider applying diluted frankincense to pulse points like your wrists or temples.
* Cinnamon: Warm and comforting, cinnamon essential oil can evoke feelings of nostalgia and coziness. Use it sparingly in a diffuser blend with other oils like orange or clove. Caution: Cinnamon can be irritating to the skin if applied
topically undiluted.
* Rosemary: Can help with memory and focus, while also easing headaches.
Other Self-Care Practices for Thanksgiving Week
Being kind to yourself is important every day and even more so during the holidays. Here are a few additional practices you can easily and quickly do to keep from feeling so stressed:
Mindful Breathing: Take a few minutes each day to practice deep, conscious breathing. This can help calm your nervous system and reduce stress. You can even do this at night when you go to bed. You’ll fall asleep breathing deep which will calm your central nervous system.
* Gentle Movement: Take a few moments to walk or stretch to release tension and boost your energy levels. Before you hop out of bed in the morning, take 2 minutes to stretch your muscles.
* Gratitude Journaling: Take a few moments each day to write down things you’re grateful for. This can shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life. If journaling is a chore (which I totally understand), then think of three things at bedtime while you’re deep breathing. Multi-tasking at its’ best!
* Connect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, even if it’s just a short walk in your neighborhood. Connecting with nature can be incredibly grounding and rejuvenating.
* Digital Detox: Limit your screen time, especially in the evenings, to promote better sleep and reduce mental clutter. Yeesh – we all
need a digital detox!
* Hydration & Nourishment: Remember to drink plenty of water and eat nourishing foods to support your physical and emotional
well-being. Don’t restrict too much; allow yourself to enjoy the holiday feast mindfully!
* Say “No” Gracefully: It’s okay to decline invitations or commitments if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Prioritize your own needs and boundaries. Remember, NO is a complete sentence. You do not have to explain, justify and defend your boundaries. I realize this can be tricky and very difficult, however, if something doesn’t work for you, then please practice saying no.
