Dare To Begin Moving Forward

Dare To Begin Moving Forward, speaking my truth, lifestyle changesDo I dare to begin moving forward on a new journey? At this age? Right now? Here?

As the old year winds down, I take time to ponder how I want to move forward into the new one. It’s hard sometimes to see just how far I’ve come in the past year when it seems I still have so-o-o-o far to go. And I know I’m not the only one guilty of feeling like I haven’t accomplished as much as I wanted to during the last 12 months.

There’s a really good reason that the rear view mirror is much smaller than the windshield. Look back just long enough to give yourself credit for what you’ve accomplished. But use the windshield to move forward on the next part of your journey. And if you’re hesitant or nervous about the next part of your journey, take comfort in this quote:

Whatever you do, make sure it makes you happy. Paulo Coelho

I absolutely love the power of this quote – it sure does say a lot, now doesn’t it?

Today, instead of talking about what essential oils can do for you, I’d like to be a bigolhonkin’ ray of sunshine in your life. I’d like to be the one who helps you begin moving forward if you’re feeling stuck. Let me give you a boost of confidence especially if you are considering a new path forward or making lifestyle changes in the coming year.

So often, we allow fear to hold us back from what we really want – what our soul really wants. What is on the other side of your fear? Is it looking for a new job? Is it leaving the relationship that you’ve outgrown (or that’s painful)? Is it moving to a new city to stretch your comfort zone? Is it taking up a new hobby or pastime? Is it speaking your truth or shining your light on a situation that no longer works for you?

What’s on the other side of your fear?

Want to know a secret? I was scared to death of aromatherapy. Seriously. What if I’m not good enough? What if I don’t understand chemistry? What if no one wants what I’m offering? What if everyone thinks I’m woo woo and “out there”? What if people get mad because I’m changing my business?

What if…

I’ve spoken my truth before and stepped outside of the box that people put me in with consequences I didn’t appreciate or fully understand. I got tired of saying “what if”. Meaning what if someone doesn’t like me anymore because of my choices? What if someone gets their feelings hurt because I’m making changes to my life?

I’ve spent a lot of years trying to please everyone so that nobody gets mad. People tend to paint themselves and others into a box because it’s comfortable. And comfortable isn’t always good for us as human beings.

Y’all, we can sit in the box that other people have painted us into or we can stand up, speak our truth and say that this situation isn’t working anymore — it’s time for old endings and new beginnings. Time for chnge

I love Pixie Garden and Gifts and I absolutely love being the Chief Pixie – I’ve had so much fun and enjoyed your giggles when you read my title on my business card! But I had to let go of my charming boutique by the sea in order to make room for Scented Balance – a place where I really have gifts to offer to you.

Yes, I promise you that Scented Balance has its’ share of charm and whimsy but I can do so much more to help you take charge of your health instead of simply offering gifts you might need to dust. My mission has become to educate people on how to take control of their health through aromatherapy and plant-based products. #wannalookgoodnaked

Have I struggled with and grieved this decision? Yes. Absolutely yes.

But it’s time to move forward. Dare to Begin. Why not begin along with me? What do you need to let go of in the coming year?

Staying Calm Through the Holidays

Staying Calm Through The Holidays, essential oils for anxiety, essential oils for sleep, aroma diffuserThis week, I’m writing to you with a few tips for staying calm through the holidays. Is it just me, or is everyone else happy to see this year finally end?

This year – to say the least – has been wearying to even the strongest of us out there. If you feel like you’re facing another testy holiday, by all means get yourself some Lavender, Clary Sage and Neroli/Petitigrain! Throw in a bit of Lemon, Frankincense and Vetiver and you have your very own “joy juice”! Diffuse it into the air or put a couple of drops of this combination in your diffuser necklace to keep you happy and relaxed the entire time.

It’s interesting for me to watch how essential oils work their magic. Since I am my only test subject, you can imagine how un-scientific my theory is, but they certainly do work their magic for me!

I have a diffuser necklace that I usually wear every day and I put two drops each of Bergamot, Sweet Basil, Neroli/Petitgrain and Clary Sage in it. The pad inside the necklace will hold the scent for two or three days, so it doesn’t take much. I absolutely love the pungent sweetness of these oils together and I have found, however un-scientifically, that they lift my spirits and help keep me calm.

Hopefully, I’m not sharing too much information – if you’re like me, you have times where you feel frustrated, stuck, worn out or just plain over it – whatever “it” may be. It could be a full moon and a high tide, it could be because it’s dark at 5:30 PM, it could be a lot of things. Sometimes, I’m just “over” the day.

That’s when essential oils can work their magic in the best possible way!

Each oil has its’ own energetic qualities and I’ve learned which ones really work for me. I know whenever I need a bit of relief to load up my cold mist diffuser and my necklace with the Clary Sage and Neroli/Pettigrain.

There’s also some really good oils to help you through chaotic times (such as the holidays):

Chaos getting to you? Combine 2 drops of Ylang Ylang, 2 drops of Neroli/Pettigrain and 6 drops of Roman Chamomile in one ounce of unscented lotion and apply to your neck, throat and chest three times daily.

Here’s a another grounding blend that’s also uplifting and relaxing:

  • 2 drops  Vetiver
  • 7 drops  Spikenard
  • 2 drops  Sandalwood
  • 2 drops  Lavender
  • 5 drops  Lemon
  • 1 ounce  Unscented Lotion

Combine all ingredients in a glass bottle with a pump closure. Shake well before each use. Gently massage into your belly and the bottom of your feet three times per day. CAUTION: this blend is phototoxic, so do NOT put it on skin that will be exposed to the sun.

If you are grieving a deep loss, the holidays seem to make those emotions even more tender. Here’s a blend to help you with that:

Grief Blend

  • 10 drops  Sweet Orange
  • 9 drops    Cypress
  • 8 drops   Frankincense (Sacra)
  • 3 drops   Neroli
  • 1 ounce  Jojoba Wax

Combine all ingredients into a one ounce bottle with pump closure. Shake well before each use. Use when needed, gently massaging on forearms, front of wrists and a small amount on temples. You can also inhale this blend deeply. The Sweet Orange is very good for digestion, so if you’ve had a bit too much to eat, you can also rub this on your tummy. Aromatherapy Services

On the other hand, sometimes you need an emotional pick-me-up. Not just during the holidays, but through the long, dark days of wintertime. Try this blend:

Pick Me Up Blend

  • 4 drops   Geranium
  • 9 drops   Bergamot
  • 4 drops   Rosewood
  • 4 drops   Sweet Orange
  • 1 ounce  Unscented Lotion

Combine all ingredients into a one ounce glass bottle with a pump closure. Apply to chest and back of neck four times daily. Shake well before each use. CAUTION: this blend is phototoxic, so do NOT put it on skin that will be exposed to the sun.

If you want any of these blends, just send me an email or call and I will be happy to make them for you.

I’m so grateful for each and every one of you this past year. You’ve helped me build my dream of helping you in a way that also helps me, too.

If you have any questions, I would love to talk with you about your needs and concerns. You can email me directly at balance (a) scentedbalance (dot) com or simply fill out this contact form.

As always, I am very grateful you chose to stop by.

Merry Christmas and many blessings to you and yours!

Tea Tree The Workhorse Oil

Tea Tree, tea tree uses, tea tree oil acne, tea tree oil dandruff, melaleuca oil, yeast infection home remedyI call Tea Tree the workhorse oil because it is so very versatile. Not everyone appreciates its’ earthy aroma, but I can tell you from experience how good – and easy – it is to use around the house.

Melaleuca alternafolia is the Latin name for Tea Tree oil and it is native to western Australia. At one time, the leaves of the plant were used as a substitute for tea which is how it got its’ common name.

According to Cathy Wong, ND, Tea Tree oil has a long history of use by Australian Aboriginals. They used tea tree leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, and infections by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area.

Since it’s not really practical to crush leaves, a bottle or two of Tea Tree essential oil around your home can help you with everyday life.

Luckily, the scientific community researches essential oils to find out which components are most useful for medicinal applications. You can read more about the scientific evidence here and also find many uses for Tea Tree oil here.

It’s not without safety concerns though – please do not use Tea Tree oil if you are pregnant, nursing or have had hormone-sensitive cancers. As with almost all essential oils, I don’t recommend using it straight out of the bottle – especially if you have sensitive skin. And NEVER take Tea Tree oil internally as it is very toxic.

According to an article in the International Journal of Aromatherapy,  Tea Tree oil has a combination of useful properties including strong anti-microbial activity especially when combined with other oils such as Lavender and Eucalyptus.*

So, what does that mean for you?

You can use Tea Tree to address everyday concerns such as acne, athlete’s foot, dandruff and even against mold. I’ve used a combination of 4 ounces each of filtered water and vodka with 10 drops each of Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Lavender and Rosemary in a spray bottle in the shower area to help keep mold to a minimum. This is also good to spray on areas where germs are rampant such as high chairs and door knobs; simply spray and wipe with a dry cloth.

Tea Tree Oil is one of the ingredients in PsoMaxx (TM), which is a salve used to address psoriasis and eczema. Because of its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, Tea Tree is perfect for getting ahead of minor infections, help support a healthy respiratory system, cleaning the air after sickness and to assist your body when it needs to heal.

Tea Tree Essential Oil For Yeast Infections

Fair warning here: this paragraph is definitely TMI! Yeast infections are the absolute worst and the OTC stuff from the drug store is full of toxic chemicals – how does that really help a yeast infection?

Ladies, every time you take an antibiotic, you know you’ll deal with a yeast infection to add to your misery. Antibiotics kill off everything including any good bacteria that your body needs to fight off infection.

The DIY website, OneGoodThingByJillee.com, offers a simple and inexpensive yeast infection home remedy without resorting to chemical stuff at the drug store:

Melt the coconut oil in the microwave just enough to make it liquid – this only takes a few seconds, so keep an eye on it! Mix in the essential oils (you can use more if you know you’re not sensitive or allergic to them) and pour into the ice cube mold. Put the mold in the freezer for at least 20 minutes so it’s solid. You should probably keep them in the refrigerator in a covered glass dish especially if it’s hot weather. To use, break one of the cubes into 3 pieces and insert into your vagina. Since the coconut oil will melt upon skin contact and it’s messy, you’ll need a panty liner or pad to protect your clothing. Repeat as necessary for soothing relief without all the chemicals.

Please note: if this is your first time dealing with a yeast infection, you should visit your doctor to make sure that’s what it is. Otherwise, for those who have dealt with the issue before, you’ll appreciate this natural remedy especially if you can’t get to the doctor.

Balance Me Beautiful has a great article on the many ways to use Tea Tree Oil:

  • Add a few drops in your running bath water to help with symptoms of cold and flu.
  • Add a few drops to your shampoo to deal with head lice and dandruff.
  • Add a few drops to a cold mist diffuser to help with congestion.
  • Add no more than 5 drops to your washing machine to help get rid of the musty smell from towels and gym clothes.
  • Treehugger suggests using a couple of drops in a steaming bowl of water for sinus infection. Put a towel over your head and breathe in as deeply as you can.

Change Is In The Air!

Change, aromatherapist in Winston-Salem, holistic life coach in Winston-Salem, sinus problemsChange is in the air and that’s a good thing! I’m excited about the direction my business is taking and I’m here to share the good news with you.

As of January 1, 2017, Pixie Garden and Gifts will officially become Scented Balance, Inc. I am proud to announce these changes as Scented Balance reflects the combination of handcrafted artisan products with my aromatherapy and holistic life coaching practice.

Why the change? Well…it’s a lo-o-o-o-o-ng story and I won’t bore you with all the details (who has time for that anyway?) but I’ll give you the nutshell version.

I began my journey with Pixie Garden and Gifts hoping to open a charming gift, garden and gourmet boutique by the ocean. I worked pretty darn hard to make it happen – over several years as a matter of fact – but doors simply did not open for me.

You know, you can bang on a locked door only so long before you get the message that it isn’t meant to be.

So, instead of banging on that locked door, I chose to bloom right where I was planted and in 2015, Pixie Garden and Gifts became a mobile boutique at farmers markets, fairs and festivals.

I knew I could do good things to help people find the whimsy and magic in everyday life, so I included handcrafted personal care products along with the gift and garden lines.

I have met so many wonderful people over the last few years. So many sweet souls have come to my booth; we’ve talked, we’ve cried, we’ve laughed, we’ve looked at solutions for your issues and hugged one another’s neck.

I have no words to describe the joy and fulfillment I have when you tell me how one of my handcrafted products has made a difference in your skin – and your life.

That part will NOT change! I love working with you, helping you take back your life from eczema and psoriasis and helping you find solutions to address your aches, pains, anxiety, depression and anything else you need.

So what changed?

Aromatherapy opened my eyes to the amazing benefits of essential oils. Each essential oil has its’ own therapeutic benefits to help you take charge of your overall well being in body, mind and spirit. I began my aromatherapy training in April, 2016 and finished in September, 2016. It was a long, hard summer trying to run a business and learn so much chemistry, but I did it!

It was serendipity that I was researching essential oils to blend into new scents and discovered a way to learn how they can help you feel better, touch your emotions and speak to your soul. Essential oils are powerful tools when used correctly and I knew I wanted to learn how to use them to help everyone who crossed my path. Time for change, change is in the air

Balance in body, mind and spirit is very important to me. Too much of a good thing isn’t good for balance in any part of life and being an aromatherapist has taught me so much about this subject.

Using a particular blend of essential oils geared toward your unique concerns can help you achieve better balance in every aspect of your life.

Through my training, I now offer pure, therapeutic products to serve those who live with eczema and psoriasis, chronic pain, migraines, digestive and respiratory issues, sinus problems, anxiety and depression as well as experiencing menopause concerns.

It feeds my soul knowing that I can help someone who lives with sinus problems or has endures a migraine. It makes my heart so happy when you tell me you come to a market because I’m there and you want more of a product that is helping your anxiety or chronic pain because of the products I painstakingly craft.*

More than anything, I want you to know how grateful I am to each and every one of you for your time, your kindness, your business and your willingness to look at your healthcare concerns from a different angle. You’re helping me make my dreams come true.

I want to help you and I can better serve you as a certified aromatherapist and holistic life coach at Scented Balance.

I would love to talk with you about your needs and concerns. You can email me directly at balance (a) scentedbalance (dot) com or fill out the contact form.

As always, I am very grateful you chose to stop by.

Blessings,

Melissa

Frank Who? Frankincense – That’s Who!

Frank Who? Frankincense That's Who!

Frank Who? Frankincense – that’s who!  Frankincense is a versatile essential oil that goes back thousands of years. It has amazing properties that are good for everything from facial care to addressing inflammation.

Frankincense is prized for it’s medicinal value. History in the Headlines gives the short version of Frankincense (and Myrrh):

“Both frankincense—also known as olibanum—and myrrh have been traded in the Middle East and North Africa for upwards of 5,000 years. It is believed that the Babylonians and Assyrians burned them during religious ceremonies. The ancient Egyptians bought entire boatloads of the resins from the Phoenicians, using them in incense, insect repellent, perfume and salves for wounds and sores; they were also key ingredients in the embalming process. Myrrh oil served as a rejuvenating facial treatment, while frankincense was charred and ground into a powder to make the heavy kohl eyeliner Egyptian women famously wore. Sacks of frankincense and potted saplings of myrrh-producing trees appear in murals decorating the walls of a temple dedicated to Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt for roughly two decades until her death around 480 B.C.”

Can you imagine looking at the Boswellia tree and deciding the sap would be good to put on your wound? I get that in ancient times, everything was used and nothing went to waste because there wasn’t a local drug store, but this still amazes me. The wisdom of ancient people in using essential oils is fascinating especially from a medicinal perspective.

Frankincense comes from the gummy sap that oozes out of the Boswellia tree when the bark is cut. This resin is allowed to harden and then scraped off and used for incense. The resin can also be chewed like gum and when burned like incense, it gives off a sweet, citrus-y aroma. Frank Who? Frankincense

The therapeutic properties have many uses. Frankincense is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, an immune stimulant, is wonderful as an overall tonic and prized for its’ skin nourishing qualities.

If you’re living with arthritis, Frankincense is ideal to apply to your sore, swollen joints. Due to its’ highly anti-inflammatory properties, it’s one of the ingredients in Flexatoid – especially made for arthritis.

This beautiful essential oil is excellent for compromised skin such as eczema and psoriasis. Frankincense is one of the ingredients in PsoMaxx Psoriasis and Eczema Salve because it is so good for your skin.

Frankincense for Meditation and Prayer

There’s energetic qualities to each essential oil and Frankincense is no different. If you’re meditating or praying, Frankincense is especially good to help quiet your mind.

It supports reflection and introspection, encourages emotional healing on all levels, quiets the mind and supports focused attention and tranquility. If you’re like me with a monkey mind that goes nuts the moment you try to be quiet, then Frankincense is perfect to diffuse when you want to meditate or pray.

If you would like to get some Frankincense, Aromatics International is a wonderful company offering pure essential oils that are sustainably harvested, wildcrafted and unsprayed by pesticides.

How can I help you today? You can email me directly at balance (a) scentedbalance (dot) com or fill out the contact form.

As always, I am very grateful you chose to stop by.

Blessings,

Melissa
